Sanctuary Mustangs
If you have gained the trust of a horse, you have won a friend for life.

Rain
Rain was the first horse to arrive at Wild Spirit Mustangs! She is not a mustang but an appendix quarter horse that needed a soft landing as her owner wasn’t able to care for her any longer and she was at risk of getting shipped to slaughter. Rain has a lot of physical issues and compensation patterns, making her unsuitable for riding. Rain fulfills a very important role by keeping everyone in line at Wild Spirit Mustangs. She is the definition of a BOSS mare! She is a very opinionated and strong willed mare, but truthfully just really wants to have you to herself.

Zoe
Zoe was the second horse to find a forever home at Wild Spirit Mustangs. This little spitfire Colville Reservation mustang is the one that forever changed Jeske’s life, and launched her into her mustang journey. She took the longest to come around and trust people, she still has a lot of stranger danger but we are making progress slowly but surely. Zoe introduced Jeske to positive reinforcement training as she was extremely fearful and aversive to pressure. The positive reinforcement training truly helped her come out of her shell and she is a great example of how not every mustang fits into the mold of traditional horse training methods.

Ruthie
Ruthie was in rough shape when she was rescued from a Colorado kill pen. Upon arrival at Wild Spirit Mustangs we didn’t know if she was going to make it. She was extremely under weight, had terrible skin sores and was overall very weak. After about a week of intensive care, she started to have a little spark back in her eyes. She has recurring ulcers that we are regularly treating with herbal ulcer medication to keep her comfortable. We don’t know anything about her past, but one could wonder… she is extremely fearful of people, most likely due to being abused and neglected and at this point she will only let Jeske near her. We are continuing to work on building trust and hope to get her a much needed dental this year.

Cassidy
Cassidy is a big beautiful South Steens Mustang that came to Wild Spirit Mustangs due to him being a “bucker” and not safe to ride. He now fills his days being Rain’s second command in charge as the herd leader and enjoys doing liberty work, showing off his big drafty feet at hoof trimming clinics, socializing with the neighbor’s horses over the fence (making sure they know he’s big and strong) and napping in the sun alongside his favorite little mare Josie.
-
Gris
Gris is an older mustang (mid-twenties) saved from the Colorado kill pen in December of 2023. He is an absolute gem of a horse and a fan favorite here at Wild Spirit Mustangs! He’s not only a giant sweetheart and an old soul, he also takes amazing care of the littles that take riding lessons on him. He’s been an amazing mentor horse to the younger horses in the herd and when he comes along on trail rides or pack trips, he likes to freestyle and run wild with the wind, always in eye sight though of his herd mates. He went through a very serious bout of laminitis when he first came to Wild Spirit Mustangs due to his metabolic sensitivities but thankfully we were able to fully rehabilitate him and adjust his diet and management accordingly to where he’s now thriving. Gris would love to have a little girl or boy that dotes on him daily. He would be available for adoption only to the absolute perfect home.

Cedar
Cedar found himself in a Texas kill pen in February of 2024. Jeske immediately felt a connection upon seeing his video and got him out of there as soon as possible. He is a giant puppy dog and loves playing and being goofy with his buddy Spencer. Jeske is starting him under saddle this spring and is hoping to add him as her trusted personal riding horse along with Pedro.

Pedro
Pedro came to Wild Spirit Mustangs from the notorious Colorado Kill Pen along with several other horses. He suffered a deep wound from being impaled by an object in his front right chest (nearly missing vital arteries) that was festering badly. It took multiple flushes and daily care to keep the wound clean and healing properly. Jeske and Pedro formed an inseparable bond during the months long healing journey and once Pedro was all healed up, she began his training and started him under saddle. Pedro is Jeske’s #1 trail partner as they love to explore the Tetons together and have gone on countless trail rides and their first Yellowstone pack trip last summer!

Josie
Josie is a coming 5 year old mare from the Devils Garden HMA (Modoc National Forest). Sadly, she was rounded up as a 3-month old and separated from her mother, leaving her with some long term trauma. This is noticeable in her behavior, especially around boundaries, and separation anxiety, and we suspect could also be the cause of her ulcer issues. Josie came to Wild Spirit Mustangs through a rather unusual way. Jeske won her through a fundraising raffle! There’s a story behind this though….. a caring mustang trainer bought her and several others for only $1/horse as the “plain" bays” were not getting any interest in being adopted. Worried about these cheap horses ending up in kill buyers hands, she purchased them with the goal to find them good homes. In 2021, after the unexpected death of a treasured friend and colleague (Joselin Matkins) Jeske stumbled upon the mustang raffle in March and for some reason felt very drawn to participating. She picked the number 16 for her raffle ticket, to honor Joselin (her birthday was March 16). Long and behold, Jeske won the little filly and decided to call her “Josie”, after Joselin. Jeske truly believes Josie came into her life through divine intervention and although Josie can be a handful, she’s honored to be her guardian. She is the most brave, curious, smart little mustang and Jeske is hoping to start her under saddle and bring her along on the trails this summer.
